This tournament is only open to players who live or attend school in Maryland.
This tournament has four different sections for players depending on their age and skill. Participants play only against opponents in their own section. The tournament begins at 9:20am for all sections.
Players in the championship sections will play four rounds at 9:30am, 11:45am, 2:00pm, and 4:15pm, with an awards ceremony starting at approximately 6:30pm. The time control is game in 60 minutes with a 5 second delay.
Players in the "under" sections will play five rounds at 9:30am, 10:40am, 11:45am, 12:50pm, and 2:00pm, with an awards ceremony starting at approximately 3:00pm. The time control is game in 25 minutes with a 5 second delay. These are strongly recommended for players in their first in-person tournament.

High School Championship
The official Maryland State High School Championship! The winner (by tiebreak, if necessary) qualifies for the Denker National Tournament of High School State Champions. Players must be in grades 9-12 and rated at least 1150 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
High School Under 1200
For players who are in grades 9-12 rated under 1200 or who are unrated.
Middle School Championship
The official Maryland State Middle School Championship! The winner (by tiebreak, if necessary) qualifies for the Barber National Tournament of Middle School State Champions. Players must be in grades 6-8 and rated at least 950 to participate, unless they have requested permission to play up, which you can ask for here.
Middle School U-1000
For players who are in grades 6-8 rated under 1000 or who are unrated.
Online registration is $50 before 9:30am on Monday, 4/10. From then until Friday 4/14 at noon online registration is $65. From noon on Friday until 8:30am on the day of the tournament, registration is $80. After 8:30am it is $90, and players registering after 8:30am will not play the first round, and will receive a first round bye. Chess sets are provided, but bring a clock if you have one.
If 2+ players tie for 1st in a Championship section, then the MD Representative to the U.S. Open Invitationals (Denker & Barber) will be determined by tiebreak. The highest rated girl to play in the event (regardless of grade group or section) is the official Maryland Girls State Champion and qualifies for the Haring National Tournament of Girls State Champions. If 2+ girls have the same highest rating, then the representative will be the highest finisher (by tiebreak, if necessary) in the highest section. The rating used will be the official US Chess rating for the month of April.
