10 Years with Coach Phyllis!

More than a thousand students have learned chess in Howard County with Coach Phyllis over the last 10 years.  She specializes in working with younger students who are just starting their journeys with chess.  She has wonderful patience that she may have developed before joining us, when she trained horses and taught people how to ride them.

Her strong classroom management skills make sure that the youngsters in her clubs have fun while still learning in a well structured environment.

She’s helped in other ways too, like helping with hiring new coaches.  A number of coaches who Phyllis assisted in bringing in are still with us teaching classes all over the DMV.

Here’s what families have said about Phyllis over the years:

  • Great teacher, we loved getting email updates. The kids absolutely loved their time there and wished it was longer. (club at Thunder Hill ES)
  • We like the emails and continual communication with parents… Chess is well organized and my child enjoys it. (club at Veterans ES)
  • She loved it and is returning for next session! (club at Pointers Run ES)
  • (My son) really loved playing bug house! (club at Manor Woods ES)
  • Our 3rd grade daughter is now able to play the game of chess with a lot more depth, obviously paying attention to the lessons given by the coaches. She was not only able to understand what was taught, but retained it and applies it when we play (teaching her dad a thing or two along the way). This is a credit to the teaching style of (Coach Phyllis), and she is eager for Chess Club to start up again! (club at Ilchester ES)
  • My son really enjoyed learning new techniques that enabled him to beat adult players! (club at Worthington ES)
  • She loved it. It is important to make the kids feel welcome. Thanks. (club at Pointers Run ES)
