Judit Polgar Is Returning to Silver Knights!
We’re closing out this summer with a bang: GM Judit Polgar is stopping by for a virtual visit! Judit has been a frequent guest over the years, and we can’t wait to have her back at SKCA. She’ll be teaching a lesson and holding a Q&A session with students on Sunday, August 12. We hope to see you there!
Judit is not only the undisputed best female chess player of all time, but one of the most iconic players in chess history. Her life and story were covered in the recent Netflix documentary Queen of Chess, which chronicled her journey from first discovering the game at age 5 to her retirement from competitive play in 2014. Check out the trailer below:
Judit and her sisters Susan and Sofia, both esteemed players in their own right, learned chess as young children as part of an intellectual experiment by their father, and by age 11, she had defeated her first grandmaster. The following year, 12-year-old Judit led her Hungarian team to a gold medal in the Chess Olympiad, defeating the heavily favored Soviet team for the top honors.
As Judit made her rapid ascent to chess stardom, she faced significant pushback, criticism, and doubt from her competitors and contemporaries, who bought into the idea that women were incapable of being strong chess players and were ill-suited to play chess at all. She excelled anyway, and at age 15, she became the youngest grandmaster in history, breaking a record previously held by former World Chess Champion Bobby Fischer.
Judit went on to have an (even more) unprecedented career, becoming the first woman to achieve a rating over 2700 and the first to be ranked in the world top 10. In 2005, she also became the first – and only – female player to participate in a World Chess Championship.
Among her most storied challengers over the years was six-time World Champion Garry Kasparov, and she made history in 2002 when she finally won a game against him and became the sole woman to ever defeat the top ranked player in the world in competitive play. In total, Judit won games against 11 World Chess Champions, including Boris Spassky, Anatoly Karpov and Magnus Carlsen.
Few chess players have racked up as many historic accomplishments as Judit, and even fewer have made as large of an impact on the chess world. Judit and her sisters proved that women can not only be exceptional chess players outright, but belong in the highest echelons of the sport. We can’t wait to hear what stories, pointers and bits of advice she has to share with students on August 12!
