Candidate Moves

Who will challenge the reigning world champion?  The overall selection process is lengthy and culminates in the “candidates” tournament.  Eight of the best players in the world will play for the honor of being the next challenger.  The event promises some great games with many instructive moments.

When kids play chess they should also follow a selection process to determine the best move.  We actually use the term “candidate moves” to describe the list of plausible moves.  Each candidate move should be evaluated before making our decision – and hopefully before touching the pieces!

In this camp, beginner students will learn basic tactics and practice with puzzles chosen from actual moves in the 2026 candidates tournament.  They will learn to recognize forced moves and to make simple decisions about which move to play on each turn.

Advanced students will analyze games from the candidates tournament more deeply and will explore more nuanced decision making.  What makes a good candidate move?  What process should I follow to choose candidate moves and evaluate the resulting position? Learn how to think like a champion!
